Franchising Trends To Watch in 2024 and Beyond
The franchising landscape is poised for significant changes in the near future, driven by emerging trends and innovative practices. For both aspiring franchisees and established franchisors, understanding these trends is essential to staying competitive and achieving sustained success. Below is a summary of an article written by Johnny Rueda of Authority Brands, that delves into the key trends shaping the future of franchising.
1. Technology Integration and Automation
Technology is now an essential component of franchising, with advancements like AI-driven marketing tools and automated inventory management systems transforming operations. Franchises that embrace these technologies are better positioned to stay ahead of their competition, increase efficiency, reduce costs, and deliver superior customer experiences.
2. Sustainable and Ethical Practices
Sustainability is no longer just a buzzword; it’s a critical aspect of modern business. Franchises that prioritize ethical practices and environmental responsibility are gaining favor with increasingly environmentally-conscious consumers. This approach not only strengthens brand reputation, but also aligns with long-term business viability.
3. Health and Wellness Focus
The health and wellness sector continues to thrive, with a growing demand for franchises that cater to physical and mental well-being. Investing in this space offers lucrative opportunities, as consumers prioritize their health more than ever before.
4. Diverse and Inclusive Franchising
Diversity and inclusion are key drivers of innovation and customer satisfaction. Franchises that actively promote these values benefit from a richer array of perspectives and are better positioned to attract top talent and foster strong customer relationships.
5. Mobile and Home-Based Franchises
The rise of mobile and home-based franchises, such as Best Option Restoration, T.A.C.T. (Trauma and Casualty Team) and Auto Appraisal Network, offers entrepreneurs lower startup costs, low overhead, and greater flexibility, without being required to maintain a brick and mortar site. These models are particularly appealing to new franchisees looking for more adaptable business opportunities.
6. Enhanced Franchisee Support
Franchisors are beginning to recognize the importance of providing comprehensive support to franchisees, from training programs, to ongoing mentorship. This support is crucial for franchisee success and satisfaction, leading to stronger overall franchise performance.
7. Customization and Personalization
In today’s market, consumers expect a personalized experience. Brands that offer customization options stand out, particularly in industries like food and beverage, where customer preferences play a significant role in purchase decisions, not to mention repeat business.
8. International Expansion
As domestic markets become increasingly saturated, many franchises are turning to international expansion to drive growth. Successfully navigating the complexities of global markets can unlock new revenue streams and elevate brand visibility on a global scale.
The future of franchising is rich with potential, shaped by technological advancements, ethical practices, health and wellness trends, diversity initiatives, and global expansion opportunities. For those looking to enter the franchising world, staying informed about these trends is key to making smart, strategic decisions. By aligning with a forward-thinking franchise model, future franchisees can position themselves for growth, minimize risks, and capitalize on the evolving franchising landscape.

FTC Ban On Non-Compete Agreements Struck Down
On August 20, 2024, a federal judge in Dallas struck down the FTC's rule banning non-compete agreements, ending months of legal uncertainty for employers nationwide. The FTC had issued the rule in April 2024, aiming to void 30 million existing non-compete agreements and scheduled it to take effect on September 4, 2024. The rule would have broadly banned non-compete agreements across all employment types, including employees, independent contractors, and interns, and required companies to inform workers that their non-competes were unenforceable. However, the rule faced multiple legal challenges, leading to conflicting court decisions, including rulings in Texas, Pennsylvania, and Florida.
In the final ruling, the Texas court found that the FTC had overstepped its authority by issuing the Non-Compete Rule, stating that it was unreasonably broad and lacked sufficient evidence to justify a sweeping prohibition. As a result, the rule will not take effect unless the FTC successfully appeals the decision. This ruling marks a significant victory for employers who rely on non-compete agreements to protect their business interests.
Despite this outcome, the attention brought by the rule and subsequent litigation has heightened scrutiny of non-compete agreements nationwide. Several states, such as California, North Dakota, and Oklahoma, already prohibit non-competes in most employment contexts. Minnesota recently joined them by banning workplace non-competes in 2023. These actions reflect a broader trend where states are increasingly imposing restrictions on or outright banning non-compete agreements, pushing towards a potential reevaluation of their use at both state and federal levels (Sources: Beck Reed Riden, Bailey Law, Wikipedia)..
